Srigandham Plantation (Sandal Wood)

Sandalwood ( Santalum album ) is a remarkable tree species known for its ecological, environmental, medicinal, and other benefits. It has been revered and utilised for centuries in various cultures around the world. Sandalwood offers several environmental advantages, making it an important component of sustainable development and conservation efforts. Firstly, sandalwood cultivation promotes agroforestry practices, combining forestry with agricultural activities.

This integration helps diversify income sources for farmers and provides economic benefits while preserving natural resources. Sandalwood also offers sustainable timber production. The valuable heartwood of mature sandalwood trees is harvested for its aromatic wood, which is in high demand for various applications. Sustainable harvesting practices ensure the long-term availability of this valuable resource and prevent overexploitation.

The symbiotic relationship between sandalwood trees and specific soil fungi, such as mycorrhizae, enhances nutrient uptake and improves soil fertility. This relationship benefits the overall health and vitality of the ecosystem. Sandalwood’s deep roots help prevent soil erosion by anchoring the soil and improving water infiltration. This contributes to water conservation and helps maintain the water table levels in the surrounding areas.
